Semiconductive, water blocking, expanded polymer layer is used in the electrical cable. An electrical cable comprises a conductor, insulating layer(s), an outer metal shield and a layer of an expanded polymer material placed under the metal shield. The expanded polymer material layer is semiconductive and includes a water swellable material.
