PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass for a near IR absorbing filter which well transmits light in the wavelength range of 400-600 nm, selectively absorbs light in a near IR region from about 600 nm, is excellent in weather and alkali remittances and has a low coefft. of thermal expansion. SOLUTION: This glass contains, by cationic %, 35-54% P, 20-47% Zn, 0-8% R (the sum of Li, Na, K and Cs as monovalent metallic elements), 0-17% M (the sum of Ca, Ba, Sr and Pb as divalent metallic elements), 1-22% R+M, 0.1-7% As, 0.2-9% Cu and 0-6% Al.
