PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify an individual at risk for developing spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 which is a progressive degenerative neurological disease by analyzing a CAG repeat region of a spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 gene and detecting the CAG repeats in the region. SOLUTION: This method is to identify an individual at risk for developing spinocerebellar ataxia type 7. An individual having at least about 30 CAG repeats in a CAG repeat region is identified as the individual at risk for developing the spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 by amplifying the CAG repeat region of a spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 gene with an oligonucleotide primer capable of amplifying the repeat region according to a polymerase chain reaction, detecting a DNA fragment containing the amplified CAG repeat region, thereby analyzing the CAG repeat region and measuring the CAG repeats in the CAG repeat region. |
