PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enlarge the range of stratified combustion up to a high load range. SOLUTION: A jet hole 15a in an injector 15 is directed toward the side where a tumble stream in a piston cavity 13b formed in the top surface 13a of a piston 13 ascends, and an firing part 23a of a spark plug is arranged in a direction in which the tumble stream ascends. Even though a part of fuel spray injected during initial stage of compression stroke, goes out from the piston cavity 13b, this part of the fuel spray going out is carried into the firing part 23a of the spark plug by a squish stream flowing from a squish area 18 due to ascent of the piston 13, and is then burnt. Thereby no unburnt HC remains. |
