Permanent magnets are mounted in a non- magnetic holder of U-shaped cross-section, whose base legs support the permanent magnets radially against centrifugal forces. The holder has two non-magnetic retaining shells (10) designed in zigzag fashion which are set axially upon the claw poles (25,27) of the pole plates and have a width in the axial direction that is equal to or less than half the axial dimension of the excitation system (21,22). The retaining shells in the peripheral direction have a number of repeatedly successive sections with a first outer mounting (11) for the root region of these claw poles of the pole plates facing them, a first inner mounting (12) with a first permanent magnet (30), a second outer mounting (13) for the peak region of the claw poles of the other pole plate and a second inner mounting (14) with a second permanent magnet. The number of sections corresponds to half the number of claw poles.
