An electro-optical scanner (20) for both one and two-dimensional symbology is provided housed within a standard computer card. In an embodiment of the invention, the optical scanner comprises a housing (60) having dimensions in accordance with a standard PCMCIA card. When the housing is inserted into a standard PCMCIA slot, an external face (28) of the housing is exposed. A light source (24, 26) is provided within said housing such that the light source can illuminate a media placed opposite the external face. An optical means (38) is disposed within said housing for receiving the light reflected from the surface of said media. A printed circuit board comprising a microprocessor, a memory, a decoder for converting reflected light into pixel data, and an interface means for controlling communications between the board and an external device is also disposed within said housing. A PCMCIA compatible bus is connected to said printed circuit board to provide input and output of signals between the printed circuit board and a connected device. The printed circuit board is also connected to said light source and optical means to allow control of the operation of the scanner.
