Agitation of the fluidized gas (4) is effected by two interacting and/or counter rotating flows which produce a very intense action on the material. The intense agitation breaks down the material (2) into the smallest fragments and also destroys a gas layer which forms on the material as it enters the fluid. An Independent claim is made for the process equipment which includes a stirring apparatus with a container (3) for the fluid gas (4) and two or more agitators (5) with axes at an acute angle to each other. The plastic is preferably fed under pressure as a paste or fluid into the gas through nozzles which may be rotated to effect a swirling action of the material jets on hitting the fluid gas. Ultrasonic vibration or high frequency vibration at the natural frequency of the particles is applied to the fluid gas to induce impulses for degassing the materials. Impulse frequency is increased proportional to the particle size reduction. Intensity of fluid action is increased by rotating the agitators in different directions and at an angle to each other.
