A hardener contains a hydrocarbon residue and has a first functional group that is reactive with a resin composition, and a second functional group that forms a covalent or coordinate bond with a metal. A hardener (I) for a heat curable reactive resin (II) used on metallic surfaces, contains a hydrocarbon residue and has a first functional group that is reactive with the resin (II) on curing, and a second functional group which forms a covalent or coordinate bond with the surface of the metal. The arrangement of both functional groups with regard to the hydrocarbon residue is such that interaction of the first functional group with the metal surface in hindered.
