Automotive belt tensioning device with spring and damper

A tensioning device is applied to a drive unit such as a chain or belt used in association with a motor. The belt is tensioned by a roller (2a) on a sprung (3) moving arm (2) with a damper (9). The damper is fixed to an arm with a piston (13) in a fluid-filled cylinder (12), the piston limiting the pressurized chamber (14). The chamber is filled with hydraulic fluid supplied via a one-way valve from a reservoir. The device has a surrounding housing (1) with liquid-tight chambers (7,8) separated by a wall (6). The sprung element (3) is located in the first chamber and the damper is in the second chamber also forming the reservoir.
