The cable is fed by its sides between cutting point and a stop (11), the section to be separated (14) being arrested during cutting, close to the cutter. Once cut, the stop is removed from the cable path, allowing the cut section to be fed onwards. Simultaneously the following cable (3) is advanced. The cut section is more rapidly advanced than the following cable. The stop returns to the cable path once the cut section has passed its location.
