According to the present invention, at least some of the nodes have elements configurable to allow signals arriving over one link to be retransmitted over more than one link, and/or at least some of the nodes have elements configurable to allow signals arriving over different links to be combined for retransmission over a single link, thereby permitting traffic to be carried between the two end point nodes a plurality of routes simultaneously.
