Voice pattern recognition using average covariance matrices

A pattern recognizing method of recognizing an input pattern by using a probability model, in which each of a plurality of standard patterns is expressed as a probability distribution defined by an average vector and a covariance matrix respectively, is provided with the processes of: extracting a characteristic vector which indicates a characteristic feature of the input pattern; performing a comparison based on a probability calculation between the extracted characteristic vector and respective one of the standard patterns by using an average matrix of a plurality of covariance matrixes of the standard patterns as the covariance matrix for the respective one of the standard patterns; and recognizing the input pattern on the basis of a result of the performed comparison. <IMAGE>
