A repeater (81), for placement at an intermediate position along an optical transmission line spaced apart from an upstream transmitter, comprises: an optical amplifier (31) for amplifying a multiplexed optical signal, comprising optical data signals, being transmitted through the optical transmission line via the repeater (81); output monitoring means (32) for monitoring the optical output from the optical amplifier (31); control signal receiving means (37) for receiving from an upstream transmitter a control signal carrying output level control information; and an output controller (34) for controlling the optical amplifier (31) according to the monitored optical output from the optical amplifier (31) and the output level control information contained in the control signal received by the repeater, the output controller (34) being operable to control the optical amplifier (31) under constant output level control to an output level value obtained from the output level control information. |
