[Class 65 (ii)] Pivoting adjustments.-A frictional device for holding a door or window in any position,which may replace the ordinary hinges or be used in addition, comprises a contractible split socket arranged on the hinging axis, a co-operating pin, and a liner of friction material through which the socket exerts a holding force on the pin, the pin and socket being attached one to the door or window and the other to the frame and the socket having two flanges, one of which constitutes a fixing flange, extending along the slit and clamping means for contracting the socket. In the form shown in plan applied to a metal-framed door, the socket has three flanges 2, 3, 4, the first being fixed to the door frame and the third to the wall, while the second, which is smaller than the flange 4, is connected to the flange 4 by screws 8, carried by the latter flange and passing through clearance holes in the flange 3, with nuts whereby the socket may be contracted. The socket contains a friction liner 11 surrounding a pin which is attached to the door by an enlarged head with flanges 12, 13 and engages at the lower end with a lug also attached to the door. The device may be arranged so that the head of the pin bears on the top of the socket to take part or all of the weight of the door. In order to relieve the door frame of strain, the socket may also have secured to it a metal strip embedded in the wall. In a modification, two holding devices are used in place of pivots at top and bottom of a window. In this form the socket is attached to the sash, the flange 2 being at right-angles to the other two, and the pin is fixed, at one end only, to the frame and carries at its other end a covering disc. In place of the stud and nut, the clamping means may comprise a short stud on the flange 4 with a screw threaded into the end of this stud and having a head which bears on the flange 3. A lock-nut may be threaded on the stud between the flanges to prevent tightening of the socket by friction in one direction of motion. The first Provisional Specification describes a modification in which the socket is not split but the pin and socket are tapered and friction is produced by drawing them together axially. |
