METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ACCESSING DATA FILES FROM A SINGLE USER INTERFACE

A method and system wherein data files representing physical objects or digital data are assigned attributes such as title, statement of responsibility, edition, type sp ecific details, publication, physical description and notes, and wherein the assignment, search, editing and retrieval of these attributes and the objects they describe are handled from a s ingle architecture. Objects defined to the system are assigned by the software interna l identifiers that encode the site, workstation, type of object and unique identification numb er. This identification method allows viewing and accessing any arbitrary collection of s ystem-defined objects from anywhere in the system domain as a single virtual collection with a common root.
