A coated paper separator for a zinc carbon cell, wherein the coating further comprises a quaternary, hydrocarbon-substituted ammonium compound, and wherein the gellant and additive have a hydrolipophilic balance of less than 17, has significant advantages in reducing leakage in zero lead cells. This is further enhanced by solution addition of electrolyte just prior to sealing of the cell. |
