The invention relates to a device for the partial colouring of hair, comprising a cylindrical container (1) for the colorant which at its one end is open for filling with colorant and at its other end has a colorant distribution device (2). The device also comprises an actuating piston (3) which can be inserted into the open end of the container (1) and by means of which the colorant can be pressed out of the colorant distribution device (2) by application of pressure. The working end (7) of the actuating piston (3) which delimits the colorant chamber (9) is surrounded by a seal (12) which acts between the piston (3) and the inner wall (14) of the container (1). The device further comprises a pistol-like handle (4) which supports the container (1). To ensure that colorant distribution is constant throughout the colouring process the actuating piston (3) at a distance from its working end (7) has at least one collecting chamber (10) which via at least one air hole communicates with the colorant chamber (9) situated behind the working end (7) of the actuating piston (3).
