A brush cutter (2) with cutting blade (12), two stroke engine (6), and drive shaft (14) integrated in the pipe (10) leading from the engine (6) to the blade (12), has a friction element (38) positioned opposite the clutch drum (34) which can be switched between a braking position and a running position using a swivel mounted lever (40). A second V-shaped swivel mounted lever (50) prevents the throttle cable (54) from acting on the valve (46a) as long as the brakes (36) are locked, even when the user presses the throttle lever (22) incidentally.
