An apparatus for the manufacturing of a heat exchanger tube comprising a tube fitted with an exterior helical fin, comprises means (13) for rotating and axially displacing a tube (2) about a tube axis, means (16) for dispensing a strip (4) under controlled tension and in edge orientation towards a position of engagement with the tube surface, and means (20) for emitting a laser beam (21) towards a bottom edge surface of the strip at a position adjacent the position of engagement. The laser beam is aimed tangentially against the nip (8) where the strip contacts the tube surface. The bonding is effected without melting the parts. The invention provides an apparatus, a method, and a finned tube.
