A portable remote control unit has a switch (2) by means of which a display unit (3) and a transmitting unit (4) are controlled, depending on the duration of the operation. With an operation which lasts for a short period, the display unit (3) is switched over so that a new control state is displayed. With an operation which lasts for a long period, a control signal allocated to the displayed control state is transmitted. In this way, several functions can be remotely controlled with only one switch (2).
