Production of a catalyst system, which consists of mixing a solution (B) of an aluminum trialkyl and/or dialkylaluminum hydride and/or alumoxane, in an inert organic solvent and optionally a conjugated diene and a components (B) and an inert, particulate, (in)organic solid; and also a cocatalyst (D) in an inert organic solvent immediately before application to (D); and applying the mixed catalyst solution to dried (D) such that it is absorbed by the carrier. The process concerns the production of a catalyst system consisting of (A) a rare earth alcoholate (RO)3M (I), carboxylate (R-CO2)3M (II), diketone complex (R-CO-CH-CO-R)3M (III) and/or halide adduct MX3.yDonor (IV) with an oxygen (O) or nitrogen (N) donor compound, (B) an aluminum trialkyl and/or dialkylaluminum hydride Al(H)xR<1>)3-x (V) and/or alumoxane R<1>-(A(R<1>)-O)nAl(R<1>)2 (VI) or (VII) of the given formulae, (C) another Lewis acid and (D) an inert, particulate, (in)organic solid with a BET specific surface area greater than 10 m<2>/g and a pore volume of 0.3-15 ml/g and also, if carbon black is used, a dibutyl phthalate (DBP) adsorption of 10-300 ml/100 g. The process comprises mixing a solution (1) of component (B) in an inert organic solvent and optionally a conjugated diene and a solution (2) of components (B) and (D) in an inert organic solvent immediately before application to (D); and applying this mixed catalyst solution to the dried, particulate solid (D) in such amounts that it is absorbed by the carrier; R = 1-20 carbon (C) alkyl; M = a trivalent rare earth element with atomic number 57-71; X = chlorine, bromine or iodine; x = 0 or 1; y = 1-6; n = 1-50; R<1> = 1-10 C alkyl.
