A heavy duty disc brake for parking comprises a caliper 14 slidably mounted on a transmission housing (12, figure 5), brake pads 40, a lever-operated rotor 50, and a ball ramp assembly for moving the brake pads into engagement with brake disc 16 on rotation of the rotor. A spacer 76 maintains the balls 74 of the ball ramp assembly at 120‹ spacing, and the ball ramp assembly is sealed by a shaft seal 82 and by a seal 100 on plastic cap 56. The cap 56 and a backing plate 36 are prevented from rotating by lugs 57, 33 engaging in notches 35 in the caliper, and the brake pads 40 are prevented from rotating by a ledge 60 on the cap and stops 42 on the backing plate. The brake pads 40 comprise a fibreglass phenolic material 67 and a fibre backing 68.
