Wool-like artificial fibres are obtained by subjecting freshly coagulated and still plastic filaments to the action of a gaseous medium in eddying motion so as to impart a curl to the filaments. After curling, the filaments may be at once stapled. The curling is conveniently carried out in a tube a, Fig. 1, having an ejector-like funnel c for the entry of the filaments and a side tube d for the supply of gaseous medium, and this latter tube may be arranged tangentially so as to increase the eddying effect in the tube a; the same effect may also be achieved or amplified by the fitting of a <PICT:0447812/IV/1> <PICT:0447812/IV/2> <PICT:0447812/IV/3> <PICT:0447812/IV/4> helical guide e, Fig. 4. The curled filament may be collected in a hardening bath, or they may be stapled as by means of a rotating blade l. Fig. 6 moving between plates k on which the tubes a are mounted, or alternatively by a reciprocating member m, Fig. 7, carrying a series of blades m<1> or provided with a series of openings having knife edges.
