PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic speed control device capable of preventing a careless access to a preceding vehicle. SOLUTION: A target vehicle speed is determined by a target vehicle speed determining part 11 according to a vehicle-to-vehicle distance and the vehicle speed of a vehicle. A vehicle speed detected by a vehicle speed sensor 5 is stored in a set vehicle speed storing part 13 as a set vehicle speed value, and a smaller vehicle speed is selected from among the target vehicle speed determined by the target vehicle speed determining part 11 and the speed stored in the set vehicle speed storing part 13 by a select part 15. A vehicle speed control part 17 controls a vehicle so that its speed becomes a speed corresponding to this selected vehicle speed. When a preceding vehicle is missed, the vehicle is controlled so that a current vehicle speed is maintained until the vehicle arrives at a point where the preceding vehicle was missed.
