PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an efficient one-step process of direct styrene production from benzene and ethylene and/or ethane in a reactor equipped with a hydrogen- permeable membrane, particularly over a zeolite catalyst ion-exchanged with a specific metal element. SOLUTION: A zeolite catalyst ion-exchanged with metal elements in groups 3-15 in the periodic table (preferably Fe, Pd and the like) is set in a reactor equipped with a hydrogen-permeable membrane and benzene and ethylene and/or ethane are allowed to react with each other under the gas-phase conditions. In a preferred embodiment, a ZSM zeolite having the MFI structure can be selected as a zeolite catalyst. The cation in the zeolite catalyst is preferably an alkali metal cation because the ion-exchange rate can be increased. As a hydrogen-permeble membrane, are preferably cited alloy membranes of Pd and transition metals in groups 8-11 with a Pd content of 10-100 wt.%. The thickness of the membrane is preferably set to 5-30 μm. |
