<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To dispense with an additional select device, connection or the like by judging the continuous selection of up or down shift as a request for direct shift to a transmission which is determined to obtain a change gear ratio for obtaining the maximum engine brake and determined to obtain the optimum engine brake. SOLUTION: In the case where a driver holds a shift select lever 1 or another select device to select shift in a given shift direction in a select position longer than a reference time, and an engine brake mechanism is operated, ECU 26 determines the change gear ratio for providing the optimum engine brake under the current vehicle operating condition, and if necessary, the direct shift to the gear ratio is commanded. By this procedure, a driver can make a request for automatic execution of direct shift to the change gear ratio for operating the optimum engine brake if necessary by once movement of a control lever 1 to the select position or retention in that position. This can be achieved without the need of an additional select device, connection or the like.</p> |
