PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture processing method for correctly discriminating the direction of a character which is included in a certain picture, a picture processor using the above method and a storage medium where a program code to realize the method is stored. SOLUTION: A picture of an original which is set in an automatic original transmitting device is read (step S2) and a document direction of read picture data is discriminated (step S3). Moreover, it is judged whether a discrimination result is unknown (discrimination disable) or not in a step S4. The step proceeds to a step S6 when the document direction is discriminated only once even at the time of unknown in the discrimination result and, then, the original picture is red again. Concerning the read original picture, an edge emphasizing circuit or aγ-converting circuit is selected by a selector this time so as to execute a picture processing by the selected circuit (step S9). Then, the step is returned to S3, the document direction is discriminated and the picture is rotated, etc., so as to be outputted to a transfer paper sheet (step S8) in accordance with the document direction which is discriminated in the step S9 as fan as discrimination is enabled.
