PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a carrier life. SOLUTION: A waveguide semiconductor saturable absorbing element 10 is applied with a DC current 2 mA from a DC current 12. Input signal light 14 (wavelength: 1.55μm) and control pulse light 16 (wavelength: 1.50μm) are multiplexed by an optical coupler 18 and further CW(continuous) assist light 22 (wavelength: 1.58μm) outputted from a single-wavelength semiconductor laser 20 is multiplexed by an optical coupler 24. The multiplexed signal light 14, control light 16, and assist light 22 are made incident on the semiconductor saturable absorbing element 10 from a spherical-tip fiber 26. The projection light from the semiconductor saturable absorbing element 10 is coupled with an optical fiber by the spherical-tip fiber 28 and made incident on an optical band-pass filter 30. The optical band-pass filter 30 extracts only the wavelength of the signal light 14 from the output light of the semiconductor saturable absorbing element 10. The wavelength of the assist light 22 is equal to the transparent wavelength of the saturable absorbing element 10.
