<p>The data carrier, e.g. a banknote, a credit card, or a telephone card, is individually identified within a series of similar data carriers by a serial number provided by a number of characters which are printed along a curved line (6). The serial number can be printed onto the data carrier at a number of spaced points, with different characters within the serial number sequence having different heights, or printed in different type characters.
