The apparatus includes a force sensor which allows the force exerted on the sonotrode (9) in the direction of the opposing tool (11) to be measured. The sonotrode (9) is a part of an ultrasonic unit (8) which is mounted on a carriage (4) whose distance from the opposing tool (11) is adjustable. The force sensor is connected to a control unit (28) which alters the distance (A) of the sonotrode from the opposing tool dependent on the signal from the force sensor. A knee lever system (14) is provided for applying a force on the sonotrode. The force sensor is located in or on the knee lever system. This sensor takes the form of a strain gage, a piezoelement, a force measurement cell or a similar item with direct or indirect mode of functioning. The control unit (28) includes a stepping motor (16) for operating the knee lever system (14).
