A driver circuit (32) has a supply voltage terminal (38) which applies a voltage, higher than at positive terminal (26) of the energy source (24), to the gate terminal (34) of the DMOS transistor (20) dependent on a control signal. The driver circuit comprises a lateral transistor (50), whose collector-emitter path lies between the gate terminal of the DMOS transistor and the relay (10) earth terminal (14). The transistor (50) base terminal is coupled to the circuit supply voltage terminal and to the DMOS transistor gate terminal via a Schottky diode (56).
