Articles requiring washing (1) are placed in a container, containing water and detergent, and covered with a sponge layer (3) which consists of one or several bodies (4) of sponge-like material. The water volume is determined such that the sponge layer (3) is fully immersed in water. A tamper (6), introduced into the container (6) from above, has a main body (9) and a handle (7) and the top side of the sponge layer (3) is subjected to alternating upward and downward movements of the temper (6).
