The controller includes a decoder (200) which receives a sequence of binary system data from a disc. The audio and video data are separated and a system clock reference is extracted at a first data input. Buffers (210,220) store respective audio and video signals from the decoder and output a sequence in accordance with respective output clock signals and clock control signals from the clock reference. A data input control (240) controls the amount of data sent to the decoder from the disc according to the quantity of audio buffer data in the memory. A buffer input and output control (230) produces the clock signals for the input and output operations and measures the audio buffer data.
