A retractable sootblower (100), having a movable carriage and lance tube assembly (110, 115) for cleaning inside surfaces of a boiler, includes a stationary starter switch (37) for initiating operation of the sootblower (100) and a cable (40) disposed between the movable assembly (110, 115) and the starter switch (37) for transmitting electrical current from the starter switch (37) to the moveable assembly (110, 115). A limit switch (130) is mounted to and moveable with the moveable assembly (110, 115). A stationary switch control device (140) is disposed proximate the boiler and configured to cooperate with the limit switch (130) so as to reverse the direction of movement of the moveable assembly (110, 115) during sootblower (100) operation by reversing the direction of the current to the moveable assembly (110, 115).
