An alert state of consciousness monitoring device is maintained through monitoring brain wave/EEG patterns. EEG signals are detected by numerous sensors (10) located on headgear (20) adapted to fit a subject. When the subject is in a non-alert mental state an audible stimulus (50) is provided until brain wave/EEG activity is restored. Also disclosed are methods for maintaining an alert mental state, as well as applications for such devices, and methods.
