Motion estimation circuit for digital video encoder - determines motion vectors and associated costs for prediction modes

The motion estimation circuit receives pixel blocks which comprise a current picture and generates motion vectors representing the displacement of each block w.r.t. a reference block. The circuit includes an integrated circuit component (IM, IM1, IM2 ...) which determines motion vectors and the associated costs for different prediction modes. The component selects a prediction mode and performs vector refinement on the basis of this mode.
