The invention is directed at engine exhaust purifying system comprising a catalytic substrate structure having an inlet and outlet end located within a housing with both located in an exhaust gas stream downstream from an engine. The catalytic structure possesses a convexly shaped inlet end while the housing possesses similarly shaped, frusto-conical upstream or inlet portion. An inventive feature of the system is that the substrate is located within the housing in a manner whereby the substrate inlet face and the housing upstream portion are in a sufficiently close relationship to result in a uniform flow of exhaust through the substrate inlet face as well as a relatively low pressure drop in the inlet portion.
