[Class 94 (i)] The machine produces wrappers provided with tearing strips, e.g. of the kind described in Specification 437,207. According to the invention, a continuous narrow strip is fed into predetermined adherent engagement with the web of wrapping material, and a series of loops is formed in the tearing strip, so that on severance along a line coinciding with one end of each loop, a series of wrappers is formed and the extra material provided by the loop enables the strip to project from the edge of the wrapper. A web 10 is fed around a roller 35a to a pressure roll 13 which applies it to a drum 14 rotated as described in Specification 472,314. A thin line of adhesive is applied to the web by the periphery of a gumming wheel 32. The tearing strip is fed round a roll 44 on to the drum, and is formed into loops by a roller 45 having a projection 46 forcing the material into recesses 47 in the drum. The loops are retained by fingers 48, Fig. 3, which are moved into the recesses by cam action in a direction parallel to the axis of the roller 45. The recesses are arranged between slots 42 which accommodate knives 40 on a roll 26 for forming the cuts 41, Fig. 5, on each side of the strip. A heating device 36 ensures adhesion of the strip to the web. Knives 27 sever the web along the line 54 in separate wrappers, the line of severance coinciding with the ends of the cuts 41 and one end of the loops 52. When the loops are flattened they project beyond the ends of the wrappers. |
