In the present invention there is disclosed a process for preparing 3{beta}-hydroxyandrost-5-ene-7,17-dione (7-oxo-DHEA) of the formula II for medicinal use by allyl oxidation of 17-oxoandrost-5-en-3{beta}-yl ester of the general formula VIII wherein R represents alkyl containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms, for instance dehydroepiandrosterone acetate of the formula IV. Allyl oxidation is carried out by three-day treatment of a diluted oxidation agent at room temperature and followed with subsequent hydrolysis of the protecting group in the oxidation product that is carried out at room temperature, too with a slight excess (1.05 to 1.2 equivalent) of alkali.
