A remote control 14 is for use in a television system, where the television system includes an integrated receiver and decoder (IRD) 12 having a first smart card reader 32 is operative to accept a first smart card 42. The remote control 14 includes wireless communication apparatus operative to establish a wireless (eg. ir) communication link with the IRD, and a second smart card reader 58 operative to accept a second smart card 64. The second smart card, when inserted in the second smart card reader, is operative to communicate in wireless communication over the wireless communication link with the first smart card inserted in the first smart card reader for controlling access to services, eg. family and adult TV programs (or cheap and expensive merchandise purchases) are enabled using the cards 42,64 respectively. |
