PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the structure of the hydraulic control system of an automatic transmission through direct control. SOLUTION: A line pressure oil passage 24 having a first pressure control valve 31 located therein is selectively connected to a low and reverse oil passage 22, communicating with a low and reverse brake 15, and a high clutch oil passage 22 communicating with a high clutch 8 through an electromagnetic switch valve 23. The low and reverse brake 15 and the high clutch 8 have engagement operation making no interference. By operating engagement between two frictional engagement elements 8 and 15 by the first pressure control valve 31, the structure of a hydraulic control system is simplified.
