PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the operation of a caller to display a name and a telephone number as a character message. SOLUTION: In the case of receiving an incoming call in the setting state of an automatic answering mode, a reply message is sent to a caller side (ST1, ST5, ST6). After receiving a call start command of telephone directory data, when registration number data are received (ST9, ST10), name data and telephone number data or the like corresponding to a registration number denoted by the registration number data are read from a telephone directory data storage section and stored in a message storage section as character message data (ST12). In the message display mode, prescribed character message data selected by the operation of the user are read from the message storage section and the character message relating to the character message data is displayed on a display section. In this case, when the character message data are the name data or the telephone number data as above, the name and the telephone number or the like is displayed on the display section as the character message.
