PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To unreel a counterweight suspension wire rope efficiently and safely for a lift extension. SOLUTION: An elevator for construction work includes a carrier 4 adapted to be lifted or lowered along guide rails 3 constituting a support tower 2, and a counterweight. On the roof of the carrier 4, an excess-winding drum 8 is placed for a wire rope 7 that connects the carrier 4 and the counterweight, and at a place where the wire rope 7 is coupled to the carrier 4, a rope trailing end mounting device 10 is arranged to wind for fixation the midstream of the wire rope 7 on its rope fixing drum 11 and connect the wire rope 7 to a connecting member 4a' on the top of the carrier 4. The excess-winding drum 8 thus winds up an excess part of the wire rope 7 for storage.
