摘要 A method of disclosed for conducting microwave assisted chemical reactions that comprises directing a flow of gas into a composition while the composition is being exposed to microwave radiation of a frequency to which the composition is responsive. The gas flow is sufficient to produce a flow of bubbles of the gas through and then from the composition that physically agitates the composition as the composition is being exposed to the microwave radiation. An apparatus is also disclosed that comprises a source of microwave radiation (10), a reaction vessel (13) in radiative communication (11) with the source for being exposed along with its contents to microwaves from said source, a gas source (15) in fluid communication (17) with the reaction vessel (13) for introducing gas into the contents (16) of the vessel (13) as the vessel and its contents are being exposed to microwave radiation from the microwave source (10). The apparatus comprises preferably means of measuring a characteristic of the contents of the vessel (13) andmeans for moderating the passage of the microwaves between the microwave source (10) and the vessel (13) based upon the measuring characteristic.
