PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform by which a soot material (a deposited material of fine glass particles) having a constant outside diameter part of a uniform quality formed over the full length of a core preform is obtained with a slight loss of a glass raw material. SOLUTION: Positions for the stop and start of the raw material feed to a burner 2 are moved to the side of each dummy rod from a joining area by a prescribed length calculated on the basis of the target outside diameter of a soot material 6 in a method for producing an optical fiber preform comprising fusing the dummy rods to both ends of a core preform, preparing a starting member 3, then reciprocating and moving the resultant starting member 3 relatively to the burner 2 for synthesizing a glass and carrying out the sooting so as to stop the raw material feed to the burner 2 when the burner 2 relatively moving from the side of the core preform to the side of each dummy rod is located on the outside of the joining area of the core preform to the dummy rod.
