PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control luminance of respective colors for an upkeep discharge period with a value and a width of a voltage applied to an address by applying a pulsatile address electrode voltage to the color with low luminance at the timing synchronized with a Y electrode during the upkeep discharge period. SOLUTION: Synchronized with an X electrode voltage 10 and a Y electrode voltage 11 applied during the upkeep discharge period, e.g. when red luminance is the weakest, at the same phase as the Y electrode voltage 11, a voltage 13a is applied to an address electrode answering to red. At this time, electric field intensity formed in an X; electrode and the Y electrode are intensified, and discharge intensity is increased, and thus, the luminance is increased. At the time, unless the ruse of the applied voltage 13a is simultaneous with the Y electrode voltage 11 or within 1 μs or below at latest, an effect is small. Nothing is applied to nine voltage 13b applied to another color e.g. green and the voltage 13c applied to blue. Thus, the discharge intensity for these colors aren't changed, but only red intensity with relatively low luminance is increased. |
