PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain damage of a web to a minimum level to thereby improve the degree of smoothness by positioning at least one of front edge of a first surface coating and a rear edge thereof in an offset manner from a corresponding front edge of a second surface coating and a corresponding rear edge thereof with a sufficient amount to allow a callender roll to stepwise engage with or stepwise disengage from a segment coating of each surface of the web. SOLUTION: A segment coating film 2 is applied to a first surface of a metal foil web 1 which is continuously supplied from a supply spool 11 and taken up with a takeup spool 12. The first surface coated web is supplied to the same device in order to apply a segment coating film on a second surface thereof. To perform it an inversion mounting is made so that the web obtained with the takeup sproll 12 at first may come to the supply sproll 11 side. Under the condition where the second segment coating film 3 is properly made to come close to the first segment coating film 2, a similar application of coating is carried out. In positioning the film 2 to be offset from the film 3, the two overlap in a region shown by arrows (x) and (y).
