PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the precision of a bottom dead center by arranging slide position sensors in plural places and calculating a height from the upper surface of a bolster to the rear surface of the slide in a specified point P of the slide or the bolster based on measured values by the plural slide position sensors. SOLUTION: The plural slide position sensors which measure a distance from the upper surface of the bolster to the rear surface of the slide are provided, and these measured values (A, B, C) are inputted into a NC device. When the height of the slide in the specified point P becomes a desired value, the point is judged to be the bottom dead center and press working is finished. Assuming that the rear surface of the slide and the upper surface of the bolster are kept plane and not strained, when the longitudinal dimension and the lateral dimension of the rear surface of the slide are expressed by L1 , L2 respectively and a distance showing the position of the point P is expressed by e1 , e2 , the height of the slide in the point P is obtained from the formula, C+(e1 + L1 )×(B-C)+(e2 /L2 )×(A-B). The arithmetic operation is executed by the NC device and a servomotor is controlled.
