The invention concerns a method for determining the rate of combustion of liquid or solid propellant and for determining its combustion equation. The rate of combustion is determined from changes in the combustion surface of the propellant with the help of a pressure, acoustic or other measurement. The combustion signal can also be combined with other measurement signals. The combustion equation can be determined from a measurement during which the pressure changes during the course of the measurement. The propellant itself, its thermal energy, additional fuel, liquid or dissolved substances increase the pressure in the apparatus and produce the change in the pressure during the course of the measurement. Formation of combustion waste is prevented by the influence of oxidising filler gas or other oxidising agent.
