PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure a TS value within a standard without changing the conventional contents of components even if Al content is reduced to zero and an open casting method is adopted, at the time of producing a wire bar for steel wire by means of continuous casting of billet of small cross section. SOLUTION: This wire bar for steel wire has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.02-0.22% C, 0.01-0.40% Si, 0.20-0.60% Mn, 0.005-0.03% Ti, <=0.005% Al, 0.006-0.02% O (total oxygen content), and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. In the continuous casting of billet, open casting where a molten steel flow is exposed to the atmospheric air at the time of pouring into a mold is performed. Further, the wire bar for steel wire has the tensile strength (TS: kgf/mm<2> ) defined by inequality TS<=33+55×Ceq [where Ceq=C+0.25×Si+0.2×Mn (each by wt.%) is satisfied].
